Rim Locks & Latches
Surface fitted locks (or rim locks) offer very little resistance to either
picking or forced attack.
The cases are generally manufactured from light grade pressed steel and
are only as strong as the screws which hold them to the door.
Most are supplied with a pressed steel striking box which, again, is only
surface fitted.
The best quality surface locks offer a key range of only 50 differs, which
means that there are only 50 different keys before they start repeating.
When replacing old rim locks the most important measurements are the 'backsets'
- this is the distance between the edge of the door and the holes through
the face of the door - if these cannot be matched exactly new holes will
have to be made through the door which can look unsightly.
Surface locks are normally fitted on the inside of the door because if the
are fitted on the outside they can simply be removed by undoing the fixing
screws. They cannot normally be used on outward opening doors unless specifically
designed (or adapted) to do so.
