Almost any door can be re-inforced, but there is little point in fitting steel Strengthening onto a hollow door that swings in a poorly fitted frame.
What does CTTV do?
A well designed CCTV system will do whatever you want it to do. A badly
designed CCTV system is often worse than no system at all.
It is easier to build a system properly from the start
than to try and make an inadequate collection of bits work correctly.
Things to remember are :-
Black & White or Colour
- colour looks very pretty but is not as good for use in low light conditions.
Number of Cameras
- it is no good using a single camera to monitor too large an area. A camera
cannot give an effective image both close up and far away without being
expensive (a zoom lens camera) or inconvenient (get out the steps and change
the lens).
Lens Choice
- on some cameras the lenses are available separately which enables you
to experiment with exact images received (but this can be expensive). It
is better and more economical to try and select the correct lens from the
start.
Camera Position and Aiming
- consider if your camera site will cover the area you need it to and whether
a traditional camera would have more of a visual deterrent effect than a
hidden one.
Switchers, Quad-splitters &
Multiplexers - not an option for single
camera systems, but where more than one camera is being used, something
will be needed to get multiple camera images onto the monitor and/or VCR.
See page 8 for more detail on these items.
Monitor Selection
- A 5" monitor is very neat, but useless if you have to sit and watch
it all day. A 21" colour monitor sounds very nice, but are you only
using black & white cameras? You could use a domestic TV with SCART
or Phono inputs, but remember that you can't watch EastEnders and see who
is stealing your car at the same time.
Recording Options
- Again, it is possible to use a domestic VCR, but this will only give up
to 6 hours on an E180 tape and is no use if you insist on taping EastEnders.
A 24 hour time-lapse recorder cannot be adequately used to record happenings
in an empty premises over a long weekend unless you add motion detectors.
Although the majority of door callers are honest, sometimes
it is necessary to check identification before allowing them into your home.
Don't forget that once you open your door, all your defences are down.
Hydraulically operated door closers are designed to automatically close the door in a controlled way.
Door springs also close the door but are hidden away as they are fitted inside the back edge of the door.
Standard slide bolts are not a security solution, but they
do offer some resistance against forced attack.
Flush bolts give a smoother finish.
Indicator bolts, on bathrooms & toilets allow
more privacy.
Locking bolts satisfy some criteria when applying
for home contents cover.
